Part 1: Introduction

There are various titles for God in Old Testament Hebrew. While Elohim is God as the Creator of all things, Jehovah is the same God in covenant relation to those whom He has created. We can say “My God,” but not My Jehovah”, for Jehovah means “My God.”

In this series we will be looking at eight of God's titles in light of how His promises are fulfilled in Christ:

  1. The Lord Sees and Provides (Jehovah Jireh in the Hebrew).
  2. The Lord Heals (Jehovah Rapha in the Hebrew).
  3. The Lord is my Banner (Jehovah Nissi in the Hebrew).
  4. The Lord Who Sanctifies Us (Jehovah Qadash [or Jehovah Mekaddishkem] in the Hebrew).
  5. The Lord is my Peace (Jehovah Shalom in the Hebrew).
  6. The Lord is my Righteousness (Jehovah Tsidkenu in the Hebrew).
  7. The Lord is Present, or There (Jehovah Shammah in the Hebrew).
  8. The Lord is my Shepherd (Jehovah Rohi in the Hebrew).

God made a covenant with Abraham which finds its fulfillment in Jesus Christ. And this same God is now in covenant relation with all who have believed on His Son, Jesus Christ. These Jehovah titles are one way we can clearly see what God is toward His people. As God was Jehovah to the nation of Israel, so He is Jehovah to us, His covenant people today, through the redemptive work of the Lord Jesus Christ.

19 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us––by me, Silvanus, and Timothy––was not "Yes and no," but in Him was "Yes." 20 For all the promises of God in Him are "Yes," and in Him "Amen," to the glory of God through us.” (2Corinthians 1:19-20 EMTV)

All of the ancient prophecies and promises from Jehovah find their fulfillment in the Christ. We are blessed recipients of these prophecies and promises:

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ:” (Ephesians 1:3 ASV)

“For of his (Christ’s) fulness we all received, and grace for grace.” (John 1:16 ASV)

These prophecies and promises have two general categories:

  1. The glory to come with Christ ruling over all.
  2. All nations being blessed through Abraham.

1) THE GLORY TO COME:

  • “then I will establish the throne of thy kingdom over Israel for ever, according as I promised to David thy father, saying, There shall not fail thee a man upon the throne of Israel.” (1Kings 9:5 ASV)

  • “1 And there shall come forth a shoot out of the stock of Jesse, and a branch out of his roots shall bear fruit. 2 And the Spirit of Jehovah shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of Jehovah. 3 And his delight shall be in the fear of Jehovah; and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither decide after the hearing of his ears; 4 but with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth; and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked. 5 And righteousness shall be the girdle of his waist, and faithfulness the girdle of his loins. 6 And the wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. 7 And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. 8 And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder’s den. 9 They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of Jehovah, as the waters cover the sea. 10 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the root of Jesse, that standeth for an ensign of the peoples, unto him shall the nations seek; and his resting–place shall be glorious.” (Isaiah 11:1-10 ASV)

  • “6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of Jehovah of hosts will perform this.” (Isaiah 9:6-7 ASV)

  • “And he hath on [his] vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.” (Revelation 19:16 AV)

  • “13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. 14 For they that say such things make it manifest that they are seeking after a country of their own. 15 And if indeed they had been mindful of that country from which they went out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But now they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed of them, to be called their God; for he hath prepared for them a city.” (Hebrews 11:13-16 ASV)

  • “26 His voice shook the earth at that time, but now He has promised, Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also heaven. 27 Now this expression, “Yet once more,” indicates the removal of what can be shaken––that is, created things––so that what is not shaken might remain. 28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us hold on to grace. By it, we may serve God acceptably, with reverence and awe;” (Hebrews 12:26-28 HCSB)

2) ALL NATIONS BLESSED THROUGH ABRAHAM:

  • “25 Ye are the sons of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with your fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed. 26 Unto you first God, having raised up his Servant, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from your iniquities.” (Acts 3:25-26 ASV)

  • “Now to Abraham were the promises spoken, and to his seed. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.” (Galatians 3:16 ASV)

  • “For not through the law was the promise to Abraham or to his seed that he should be heir of the world, but through the righteousness of faith.” (Romans 4:13 ASV)

  • “in hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised before times eternal;” (Titus 1:2 ASV)

  • “But now hath he obtained a ministry the more excellent, by so much as he is also the mediator of a better covenant, which hath been enacted upon better promises.” (Hebrews 8:6 ASV)

  • “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have eternal life.” (John 3:16 ASV)

  • “16 The Spirit himself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are children of God: 17 and if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint–heirs with Christ” (Romans 8:16-17a ASV)

  • “Blessed be Jehovah, that hath given rest unto his people Israel, according to all that he promised: there hath not failed one word of all his good promise, which he promised by Moses his servant.” (1Kings 8:56 ASV)

ALL THE PROMISES OF GOD FIND THEIR "YES" AND "AMEN" IN JESUS CHRIST:

“19 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us - by me, Silvanus, and Timothy––was not "Yes and no," but in him was "Yes." 20 For all the promises of God in him are "Yes," and in him "Amen," to the glory of God through us.” (2Corinthians 1:19-20 EMTV)

“according to [the] purpose of the ages, which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord,” (Ephesians 3:11 Darby)

“16 because by him (Christ) all things were created, those in the heavens and those on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities; all things have been created because of him and for him. 17 And he is before (preeminence) all things, and in him all things are held together.” (Colossians 1:16-17 EMTV)

All the promises of God find their “yes” and “amen” in Jesus Christ. He is the purpose of all the ages. Without him everything falls apart. We will be seeing in this series that God is the same powerful and delivering God that we read about in the Old Testament. He is the same Jehovah to us. We are in covenant relation to JEHOVAH through the Lord Jesus Christ. Now, all those promises of God are fulfilled in Christ and we are in him.
